Xylitol

Chemical Formula:

Synonyms

Description

White, odorless, sweet-tasting powder.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol. It has 40% fewer calories than sugar, but is just as sweet. It is poorly absorbed by the body, so it does not raise insulin levels as much as sugar. It does not promote tooth decay.

Uses

Xylitol is used in low calorie candies, gums, and mints, and in many foods as a sweetener.

It prevents bacteria from adhering to cells in the mouth and gums. It binds to calcium and aids in remineralizing tooth enamel and bones.

Xylitol is used in nasal sprays and ear drops to reduce the adhesion of bacteria.
