The B vitamin Niacin is also known as Nicotinic acid. The body converts

The methyl ester and benzyl ester forms can be used as a
rubefacient
(a vasodilator, opening up capillaries, which as a side effect, makes the
skin redden, hence the name), and to reduce plasma cholesterol.
Of course, as a vitamin, Niacin aleviates
pellagra, the disease
caused by the lack of this vitamin.
